‘The necessity of ruins’ (Films 2012 – 2023) by Gavin Murphy at Composite
The necessity of ruins brings together for the first time three related film works by Irish artist Gavin Murphy. Gavin is a Dublin-based artist and curator with an interest in research, cultural sites and histories.
Composite is delighted to present ‘The necessity of ruins’, an exhibition that brings together three related film works by Irish artist Gavin Murphy.
Gavin is a Dublin-based artist and curator with an interest in research, cultural sites and histories. As joint artistic director of Pallas Projects/Studios, he has devised and realised numerous projects and programmes, and writes, advocates and conducts research on artist-run practice.
Something New Under the Sun (2012) considers the social and cultural relevance of a demolished modernist factory building and the work of its chief designer, Oliver P. Bernard. Double Movement (2017) traces the political, architectural, and civic contexts of Dublin’s central bus station, Busáras, and its basement theatre the Eblana, which staged plays ranging from highly popular revues to experimental works, portraying subjects which were taboo in the Ireland of the time, such as contraception, homosexuality, and criticism of the Catholic Church. Finally, Remaking the Crust of the Earth (2023) looks at glass in its myriad guises, through the lens of Australian-born architect of Irish descent Raymond McGrath.
𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘯𝘦𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘳𝘶𝘪𝘯𝘴 (𝘍𝘪𝘭𝘮𝘴 2012—2023) is supported through funding by Culture Ireland, and the Arts Council of Ireland. Composite is supported by the City of Yarra.

Accessibility
The Johnston Street Lift, located immediately inside 35B Johnston Street (LG) provides access to levels UG, 1 and 2. 35A Johnston Street provides a footpath and ramp to the Automatic door entrance to level UG. From 35C Johnston Street, there is a footpath and ramp leading to the Johnston Street lift and external staircase.
The only at level access paths to Johnston Street UG are via Entrance 35A Johnston Street or 30A Perry Street. The at level access paths to Johnston Street Building LG are via 35B and 35C Johnston Street. The access path to Johnston Street Building L1 and L2 requires use of the Johnston Street Lift.
Accessible toilets are located within the Johnston Street Building on Level UG and Level 1, toward the western end of the building near entrance 35A Johnston Street. Accessible toilets are also located at the eastern end of the Johnston Street Building on Level LG, near the Music Market co-working space. These toilets are open throughout office and event hours. All accessible toilets are equipped with manual locks, exit buttons and grab rails.
