Introduction to Neurodiversity: Creative Industries

This session is an intro to neurodiversity & inclusive practices for arts leaders and creatives—both neurotypical & neurodivergent.

It’s estimated that 15-20% of people working in the creative industries identify as neurodiverse (ND). Fatigue and burnout are disproportionately high amongst this community so neuro-inclusive practices, processes and spaces have a huge positive impact on personal, social and workplace wellbeing.

This session will be a light-hearted, engaging and info-packed introduction to neurodiversity: what it is, and how we can rethink the spaces we work and create in.

You’ll come away with clear & tangible explanations of:

  • Neurobiology (ADHD-focused)
  • How it can present in everyday life
  • Where neurodivergent minds thrive & why
  • Sensory considerations in built & outdoor spaces
  • Neuro-inclusive language & communication styles
  • Actionable workplace adaptations in small-med orgs
  • Creating neuro-inclusive events
  • Supporting casual & short-term contract staff/artists
  • Creating reasonable adjustment plans
  • Relevant public/workplace regulations

Relevant for:

  • arts managers/producers/production teams, who want some some high level knowledge as an entry point to neurodiversity in the workplace.
  • recently diagnosed ND creatives/managers/employees looking for a condensed summary of information in a supportive environment.
  • those well-versed in navigating ND in the creative industries context but would like some re-affirming.

Ticketing: There are 3 ticket price options. All ticket income will contribute directly to venue hire cost. There is also an option to contribute to additional no-cost tix for the event, via a donation.

Ticketing note: It’s a reverse price-surge situation – the more $ over the counter, the more no-cost tix can become available for folks who would greatly benefit from these.

About Laura Sheedy: I was diagnosed with ADHD 13 years ago and as a theatre-maker, director, producer and teaching artist I have a deep understanding of navigating neurodivergence across the performing arts, festivals and tertiary education. As a consultant, my aim is to share as much knowledge & awarness around neurodiversity as I can to help support artists, programming & production staff, and arts organisations.
