In Stranger than fiction, Andrea Illés plays with absence and presence with a project in multiple parts. For the first month of the exhibition, the Naarm/Melbourne based performance artist will be represented by a video connection between the gallery and her West Space Studio.
From Friday 9 August – Friday 16 August, this work will be activated by a multi-day performance viewable in-person in her studio and transcribed by a screen in the gallery. The audience can make the choice how we wish to view her. At West Space, the stage is set on a humble computer screen, sitting on the threshold between the office and the gallery. We anticipate her stepping into view at any moment.
Andrea writes,
“With this work, I focus on the Sisyphean task of making image and atmosphere that translates self-concept. I am interested in the ephemerality of understanding and relational connection and my own relentless desire for these things to be sustained. I am looking to classical sculpture, myth, and my own culture and experiences to expand how a body, it’s stories, and its failures can be comprehended.
With an interested in the relationship between narrative and binaries like deception<>truth; real<>imagined; inside<>outside, I will perform for several consecutive days, methodically translating image and experience. The faltering translations, and the transitions between them, will eventually become a score. I will do this in front of a camera that will act as a mirror. The space will be open to audiences and the flattened image that I make via the camera will livestream to the main gallery at West Space.”
