His practice is an ongoing study into how dynamics of political and economic power shape art and culture. He works out of Studio 7.

His writing on art and politics has been published widely, including in The Saturday Paper, The Monthly, Art+Australia, Overland, Runway and more. Recent exhibitions include All-in-One Solution for Glowing Fairness (2019) at Bus Projects, Before the Tonsils Stop (2019) at Firstdraft, and Hyphenated (2018) at The Substation.

Andy Butler’s work plays with ideas of social transformation, structural inequality and how we come together to make culture and ideas of "the good life". He works across video, installation, painting and photography, and has exhibited across Australia at artist-run and public galleries. He is a respected art critic, and his writing on art and politics has been published in frieze, The Saturday Paper, The Monthly and more. He is an independent curator whose recent projects have received national critical attention.

He is currently Artistic Director (Acting) at West Space.
